How closet lighting can really brighten your day

Some modern homes have mains-wired, overhead closet lighting, which makes the closet look more attractive, but also makes finding outfits on dark mornings much easier too. Although many period homes won't have these, there's no reason why you shouldn't add some extra modern comfort. Here are some essential tips for integrating closet lighting into your home, even if it doesn’t come pre-installed.

Imperia - How closet lighting can really brighten your day

Strips or spots

Rummaging blindly around wardrobe to find the outfit you had in mind can become a tedious part of your early routine. Installing closet lighting is one way to instantly brighten your morning, especially when the light fades in winter.

It’s not just spacious, walk-in closet-rooms that benefit from lighting – simple overhead spotlights will also help illuminate unlit corners of a standard closet. Alternatively, subtle, strip LED closet lights take up hardly any space and provide a clear, bright light to show off your wardrobe’s potential.

Wired or not

Wiring lights into your mains electricity supply is a great idea for larger or walk-in closets, as you may like a bold, centrepiece light to really accentuate your closet style. However, in many older homes there’s no existing wiring in the closet space, and you may not wish to go to the effort of rewiring it all yourself. In this case battery-operated closet lights are the perfect solution. Battery-operated closet lights are usually small and made to fit in any size closet. They’re also easy to attach to the ceiling, corners or back of your closet, usually with a simple adhesive back

Switch or motion sensor

Look for battery-operated closet lights with an easy switch, too. If your closet isn’t large, installing a wall switch might be more trouble than it’s worth, and in any closet a cord-pull can get tangled. Many battery-operated closet lights can be turned on by touching or twisting the cover, which is ideal; quick and space-saving.

Any kind of closet lighting is useful but a motion-sensing LED closet light is energy efficient too. It only switches on exactly when you need it, and it’s instant; the ultimate convenience feature.

Mirrors or lights

Mirrors are an easy way to bring light to your closet space, and are simple to install. They’ll double the effect of any lighting you do have positioned in the closet, and reflect the natural light too, giving you a perfect view of all your clothes. You can also invest in light-up clothes rails or rods. Swap your normal rail for one with integrated LED lighting and, again, you have a 2-in-1 feature for hanging and lighting your clothes.

This simple detail can speed up mornings and make getting ready that bit more enjoyable too. For more interior design tips and trends, from outdoor living spaces to indoor plants and walk-in closet designs, take a look at our interior design blog.
