South Tyrol has a wide range of exceptional wines and grape varieties. This is the result of the perfectly balanced interplay between climate and soil conditions.
However, without the know-how, dedication and art of the wine growers and winemakers, South Tyrol would not have achieved international fame as the"land of wines".
White grape varieties grow in more than 55 percent of South Tyrol's vineyards. The tendency is climbing. With the white wines in South Tyrol,Pinot Gris , Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay are at the forefront, with a total quantity share of around 60 percent. But nowhere else in Italy do the other white varieties like Gewürztraminer , Sylvaner , Müller Thurgau , Riesling ,Sauvignon Blanc , Veltliner , or Kerner yield wines that are so fruity, fresh, typical, and filled with character.
The future of South Tyrolean wines therefore lies especially with white wines. That is what winemakers and wine experts alike swear to.
For far more than a hundred years, all other important classic grape varieties have been cultivated in South Tyrol along with the two autochthonous red wine varieties of Vernatsch and Lagrein . Pinot Nero ,Merlot , Cabernet Sauvignon , and Cabernet Franc feel just as much at home here.
Nearly 45 percent of South Tyrol's total grape growing areas are planted with red wine varieties. Among them, Vernatsch continues to play the most important role in terms of quantity. It is the typical fruity, fresh, and drinkable South Tyrolean red wine par excellence. The big reds from South Tyrol, on the other hand, are grabbing more and more attention on the international stage: from the Lagrein that is filled with character through the expressive Cabernet .
Added to these is South Tyrol's sparkling wine made with selected grapes of three varieties.
With its exquisite quality wines, South Tyrol is one of the leading wine regions of Italy.
On a national level, the white wines of this area are first-rate. The red quality wines with their elegant bouquet are second to none amongst the highly recommended competitor wines from the Toscana and the Piemont region.
Original grape types in South Tyrol are:
- The Gewürztraminer from the wine village of Tramin. This grape has conquered the world. A dry white wine with a fruity bouquet, aromatic, pleasant and full-bodied.
- The "Kalterersee" is made from the Vernatsch grape. Bright ruby-red, light, dry and fruity; mild and easily digestible due to its low acid content and a minimal part of Tannin. Suitable for all type of food.
- The Lagrein has a dark pomegranate-red colour, is dry, strong, full-bodied and has a light violet bouquet.
