Owning a waterfront property or your own private island is considered the ultimate luxury. These upscale retreats in secluded locations offer buyers the opportunity to get far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. In turbulent times in particular, many clients appreciate the absolute privacy, security and exclusivity of a private space to enjoy with friends and family only. As with luxury properties, there is no upper price limit for private islands. “The size, geographical location, accessibility and development potential determine the purchase price. Existing buildings and their amenities also influence the market value,” says Ron Krueger, Managing Director of Engel & Völkers Kinsale/Cork.
Belize is a country on the east coast of Central America and is known for its extreme biodiversity and unique ecosystems. It is here that the world’s second-largest coral reef meets long, sandy beaches, Caribbean flair and the culture of the Maya.
For a price of 75 million US dollars (approx. 63.46 million euros), Engel & Völkers is currently brokering the exclusive “Long Caye” private island, which lies around twelve miles off the coast of the Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize. The island, which measures approximately 16 hectares, is one of the best known islands in the Placencia region and guarantees seclusion and intimacy. On the property there are a total of six small cabanas offering breath-taking views of the Caribbean Sea. The island has its own supply of water and electricity as well as boat moorings, and with its white, sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and magnificent coral reefs it also offers perfect conditions for watersports and fishing. Thanks to its first-rate location and connections to the mainland, the island also lends itself to the development of resorts.
On the island of Favignana, one of the Aegadian Islands in the Mediterranean off the west coast of Sicily, Engel & Völkers is selling the Nido del Pellegrino Resort for 3.8 million euros. The approximately seven-hectare former military complex boasts a total of ten apartments and two suites with sea views. Close by the resort, there are various small islands and coves offering the perfect conditions for different leisure activities. Favignana is one of Europe’s most beautiful islands and is just a short boat ride away from the Italian city of Trapani. The island is well known for its traditional tuna fishing and is characterized by beautiful beaches with emerald water, rocky coasts, hidden caves and the typical white houses with blue doors. The airports in the cities of Trapani and Palermo are easily accessible. “High-net-worth individuals are among the buyers of this kind of exclusive real estate. They are looking for properties as second homes, where they can bring their families and friends on holiday, but for entrepreneurs, too, islands represent an interesting investment,” says Gernot Rella, Area Manager Commercial & Residential International.
In Rooi-Els, a village in the Overberg region of South Africa’s Western Cape province, this exclusive villa with total living space amounting to around 684 square meters is up for sale for 3.33 million euros. The property is located on a peninsula and boasts four bedrooms, four bathrooms, four garages, a pool and a spacious terrace. The villa offers magnificent panoramic views of False Bay, a bay on the Cape of Good Hope in the southwestern part of South Africa, and is surrounded by untouched nature – the ideal sanctuary where you can recover from the stress of daily life.
During the corona pandemic, within the premium segment there has been increased interest in properties in secluded locations. Hence, Engel & Völkers recently joined forces with real estate company Colliers International to sell “Horse Island,” a private island off the coast of Cork in Ireland. “These special kinds of estate offer owners a place of refuge next to the water where they can feel close to nature whilst also enjoying upscale comforts, the utmost privacy and absolute flexibility,” explains Ron Krueger.
