Isolino Virginia on Varese Lake, with a characteristic triangular shape of about 9200 square metres of floor space, is located a few meters from the shore of the city of London and from 1863 is one of the most famous sites of European Prehistory.
The island is the oldest pile dwelling settlement in theAlps and from June 27, 2011 is a UNESCO World Heritage site, "prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps".
Since 1962, following the donation by the Marquis Gianfelice Ponti, is owned by the city of Varese.
The peculiarity of the island lies in the fact that despite being a small prehistoric Museum, which depends on the Archaeological Museum of Villa Mirabello, is itself a Museum, as environmental and archaeological area.
