Some Charter Know-How

A yacht charter whisks you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life into an oasis of luxury and adventure. Bespoke is the word to describe a yacht charter as it is all about you and your dreams coming true. Dreams that can be changed at your every whim.

Questions on yacht charter? Our expert charter broker Nickie Vincent, with more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of yachting, shares her advice on how to make sure you enjoy the most unforgettable holiday of your life.

When is the best time to book?

An early booking is always best to make sure you have a good choice of yachts, as many are reserved far in advance by repeat clients from year to year, especially during high season. By booking early you will also catch your crew at its freshest. June and September in the Mediterranean, November or late March in the Caribbean. While your crew will always be superb, this insider tip means you will get to benefit from their services when they are well rested and excited about the new season. If your dates are flexible try and avoid the busy July/August season and book in June or September in the Med. You will also make considerable savings by booking off season. Conditions are still excellent and the crowds are fewer. If you do have to book in the high season then we suggest you do this well ahead of time and also book your ports and any of the most popular restaurants you wish to dine in, as they quickly get fully booked during this busiest time of the year.

What tips do you have for planning a yacht charter?

Carefully planning your itinerary along with your broker and yacht captain is a must. The choice and speed of your yacht is essential when deciding how far to travel and how long to cruise for. It is advisable not to cruise for more than four to six hours a day in order for you to enjoy your trip and not overextend the crew or spend too much time underway for your guests. This will leave you plenty of time to enjoy the water toys and other activities at anchor, and visit the various destinations and ports.

How do I find a suitable yacht?

It is advisable to consider the different types of yachts available, in relation to the nature and make-up of your party. Each yacht is completely unique with its own individual crew, who are normally multinational and multilingual, so matching your nationality with the crew will ensure that you feel at home right away. Your broker will help you assess what is best suited to you as they visit each and every yacht, so it is very important to tell them as much as possible about precisely what you and your guests desire and require. Whatever you are looking for, there is the perfect yacht out there waiting for you. Work with our knowledgeable charter brokers to find the right yacht for you. Communication with your broker is the key to a successful charter, as with your captain and chef when on board. We all work hard to make your dreams come true so please do not hesitate to share them!

What about good company onboard?

It is important to choose people as guests who you really want to spend quality time with. Sharing unforgettable moments at sea is a bonding experience. Make sure you select your guests wisely and surround yourself with the company worthy of the wonderful memories you are about to create together.

What extras would you recommend?

Your crew and broker can organise interesting land excursions for you along the way, from personalised visits to museums, to a lunch or dinner prepared in the kitchen of a Michelin star chef. A gourmet experience prepared in an olive grove or an extraordinary barbecue on a deserted beach. All organised by your crew, under the stars, to be topped by a firework display to marvel your guests. We can also arrange for renowned entertainers to come aboard for your special events.

What other things should I consider?

Choose your yacht to suit your party and itinerary – as some have more deck space than others, some are classical and others ultra-modern. The faster yachts also tend to have a higher fuel consumption than slower yachts and new Hybrid yachts. This will impact greatly on your costs.
