Barcelona and the Balearics: The Growth of a New Yachting Hub
“Palma is certainly becoming the sail yacht capital of the Mediterranean,” Charles says. In fact the region as a whole – from Barcelona to the Balearics – has rapidly grown to become an important centre of yachting to rival the French Riviera.
Along with the modern facilities found in Palma, Barcelona is home to a truly world class marina. With a prime position in the heart of the city, OneOcean Port Vell has the capacity to welcome yachts with a length of 190m, making it one of the few in the world capable of doing so. Next door, MB92 is a state-of-the-art shipyard. The city has recently become the host of two other important yacht shows: the MYBA Charter Show (April 23rd – 26th 2018), previously held in the Italian port city of Genoa, as well as the inaugural LYBRA Superyacht Show which will take place from May 2nd – 5th 2018. The Catalan capital is the ideal destination from which to embark on a Balearic Islands yacht charter.
With a wild natural beauty, dramatic coastline and calm turquoise waters, it’s no surprise that the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca offer some of the finest cruising in the world. Although the secluded coves and unspoilt beaches favour discovery by yacht, the mild year round climate, rich culture and vibrant joie de vivre of the Balearics have seen the Spanish archipelago become a popular destination to invest in a primary, or secondary, residence. From traditional, yet thoroughly luxurious fincas – often sprawling estates in the hinterland – to charming townhouses close to all the amenities in Palma, in addition to our yachting operations, Engel & Völkers has a powerful Mallorca real estate presence on with over 15 agencies spread across the island.
