The Ministry for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning collaborated with The Planning Authority and have come up with the new initiative grant scheme that will turn your building from grey to green. The scheme is applicable to all private residences having a front garden, apartment blocks and penthouses having balconies overlooking public spaces and streets.
“At the heart of Green Infrastructure is the principle of co-existence, where we start to co-exist with the natural environment instead of developing in conflict with it,” says Martin Saliba, chairperson of the PA’s executive council. The scheme includes €500/m2 to create green walls and, €250/m2 for green facades. Retrofit front gardens includes a maximum of €600/m2
With a budget of €2 million PA is promising a 100% refund which would cover all costs for labour material, hire of equipment, a five-year maintenance plan and professional and consultancy fees. The funds will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
“By encouraging and supporting private property owners to introduce green facades, walls and the green retrofitting of front gardens, we are directly and positively addressing climate change, public health, biodiversity and community cohesion,” said Environment and Planning Minister.
Application submission opened on the 15th February, 2021 and will remain open up until the 9th April, 2021. Applications may be submitted through the Planning Authority’s e-applications system by the ‘Perit’ working on the project.
More information about the scheme is available on the PA website, call 2290 1544 or by emailing greenyourbuilding@pa.org.mt.
