The world's most famous fair may have started in Munich two centuries ago, but Oktoberfest today has a truly global influence. With its traditional Bavarian quirks and unmistakable sense of joie de vivre, the beer festival has established a presence in some of the most inspiring cities throughout the world. Here are the best places to sample a brew this Oktoberfest.
1. Boston, Massachusetts
Every autumn the Harpoon brewery celebrates traditional brewing with their own version of Oktoberfest. Located on Boston's thriving waterfront, the event is the perfect opportunity to celebrate in true German style, complete with bratwursts, German Oompah bands, and of course, a wide variety of Harpoon beers. For your accommodation, opt for the unparalleled skyline views of the Boston Harbor Hotel, a six-minute drive away, or the crisp urban style of the XV Beacon Hotel, just 10 minutes away by car.
2. Dublin, Ireland
You'd be forgiven for thinking that nothing could compete with St Patrick's Day in Ireland. However, Oktoberfest is yet another cause for celebration, and once a year the capital of the Emerald Isle swaps its native Guinness for Weizenbier and Erdinger, as well as a wide array of German wines. The festival also features a tongue-in-cheek tournament dubbed 'The Bavarian Games', which includes events such as a yodelling competition and stein lifting. Reside at the Shelbourne Hotel, a decadent Renaissance property just 12 minutes away by car, or the elegant Merrion, just 10 minutes away.
3. Santiago, Chile
The relationship between Chile and Germany dates back as far as the 1800s, and Oktoberfest has become a key part of the country's heritage. Every autumn multiple beer festivals erupt around Chile, and Malloco's Oktoberfest is one of the largest. Hearty Bavarian food and beverages are served up from 'Der Münchner de Malloco', a local German restaurant. Stay at the cutting edge W Santiago Hotel, about a half hour's drive away from the festival, or the opulent San Cristobal Tower, a luxury hotel just 25 minutes away.
4. Hong Kong
Asia's oldest beer festival happens in a marquee overlooking Hong Kong's beautiful Victoria Harbour. This 23 year old tradition is facilitated by the Marco Polo Hotel and places a gourmet spin on authentic Bavarian food, with succulent roasted pork knuckle and pan-fried 'Nürnberger' style sausages available alongside an abundance of beer. At the end of a long night of celebrations, unwind at either the Marco Polo itself, or the charming Langham Hotel, which is a mere minute away on foot.
5. Denver, Colorado
As you might expect from this vibrant city, Denver's take on Oktoberfest is brimming with quirky additions as well as the traditional staples of the festival. Alongside stein hoisting and keg bowling, revellers can cheer on the long dog derby and judge the best lederhosen in the costume competition. After dark, admire the firework display as you sample some premium brews. The Colorado Ritz and Monaco Hotel are 8 and 12 minutes away respectively, and each provides a luxurious setting for relaxing after the evening's frivolities.
