The Pijp

The Pijp: never a dull moment

The ‘Old Pijp’ and the ‘New Pijp’ now form the popular neighbourhood ‘De Pijp’. Two well-known squares here are the Marie Heinekenplein and the Gerard Douplein. The neighbourhood is renowned for the largest and most sociable market of Amsterdam: the Albert Cuyp, which is a daily market, except on Sundays. The P.L. Takstraat and side streets are known for the ‘workers palaces’, houses for the labourers working in the Heineken brewery, which is now the Heineken Experience tourist attraction. Partly because of the many local pubs, restaurants, terraces, and specialty shops the area is hugely coveted by singles and students. For the Dutch, the neighbourhood also has a claim to fame as the birthplace of one of the most popular Dutch singers of all time, André Hazes.

Geography and population

This Amsterdam neighbourhood is part of the borough Amsterdam-Zuid and lies just south of Amsterdam City Centre. The main thoroughfares are the Ceintuurbaan, Stadhouderskade, Ferdinand Bolstraat, Van Woustraat, and the Amsteldijk. Most streets are named after famous painters. The Pijp now has its own metro station for the North/South metro line. The area has an extremely diverse population of around 65,000 and attracts both Dutch residents and people coming from abroad, as well as many students and young people. Many who graduate tend to stay in this neighbourhood. The average annual income lies around €29,000.

Never a dull moment

The neighbourhood offers loads of activities and events and residents never have to feel bored. The Marie Heinekenplein, the Frans Halsstraat, and the Gerard Douplein are popular haunts for going out. There are many pubs and cafés that mostly attract young people and students. Furthermore, both the ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Pijp offer a lively mixture of cultures, cuisines, and terraces which are popular with both residents and tourists. With such a variety of people from all over the world, including expats working elsewhere in Amsterdam, it is a wonderfully sociable neighbourhood to live in.

The architecture in the ‘New’ Pijp is mostly based on the Amsterdam School. This used to be a typical working-class area, which can be seen in the small houses and winding streets. And even though there are, of course, still families with children living here, they tend to move out to the quieter outskirts of town. Are you, as a single earner or expat, keen to find out more about what this neighbourhood has to offer and would you like to know more about renting or buying an apartment in the Pijp? Then get in touch and let us help you as your real estate agent in your search for housing that matches your wishes and budget.
