HISTORY:
The founder of the VENETIAE courtyard was a seventeenth century merchant and cashier of the VOC Jacob Stoffels. He traded a lot with Italy, especially Venice, hence the name he gave to his house and the courtyard behind it. The entrance with large letters carved into the facade above it, VENETIAE, also gives access to an alleyway with a text "vrede zy met dezen huize". It was built in 1650, 13 dwellings for the occupation of poor widows and elderly spouses. When he died in 1671 he made Gerrit van Maarloop his executor. After the death of his sister and sole heiress Anna Stoffels, the administration came entirely to Van Maarloop. Around 1709 this regent had another 17 houses built in an austere classicist style. At that time the courtyard became known as "Van Maarloopshofje". On 2 March 1685 it received exemption from all charges and taxes and exemption from "Stadts excijnse".
