Geopark Algarvensis

The only geopark project in southern Portugal is located in the interior of the central Algarve.

In a territory around 350 million years old and 1386 km2, we can find an impressive geological heritage of great international scientific importance, a cultural heritage of great relevance and a notable diversity of ecosystems, including several local species.

Explore some of the Algarve's best kept secrets through the geo sites, such as the Metoposaurus Algarvensis site – a 227-million-year-old amphibian fossil, the water springs at Fonte da Benémola, the rock salt mine 230 meters depth or the characteristic rock formations of Escarpão, Rocha da Pena or Vale Fuzeiros, in Albufeira, Loulé and Silves.

Until September 12th, there is still time to enjoy the Geopalcos, an event that links art, science and nature, embracing several cultural interventions that take place in 10 unusual sites in the Geopark area.
