The “Via Algarviana”, created in 1995 from an old religious trail followed by pilgrims heading to Sagres, is a great pedestrian route, crossing the interior of the whole Algarve, over a 300 km path.
From Alcoutim, to the east, to Cabo de S. Vicente, to the west, this route is divided in 14 sectors and integrates a network of regional walking routes, with several complementary footpaths and several connections, which allows connecting the coastline and the hinterland.
The itinerary is adjustable to the pace and desire of each hiker and is the perfect opportunity to explore and discover a little-known Algarve, supported by signs, informative and thematic panels, picnic parks and a reception centre. Besides promoting the cultural and environmental heritage of the region, the “Via Algarviana” intends to encourage and enhance the practice of hiking as a component of ecotourism, as well as a contribution to mitigate the effects of depopulation in the interior of the Algarve.
