In 2017, Wilfrid and Milka Hoos decided to live in the Algarve region, and to invest in an exciting business: the idea was to provide other lovers of the region with the opportunity to buy (or sell) a property in the south of Portugal, an area renowned for its tranquillity and high quality of life. And so, when the opportunity arose to invest in an Engel & Völkers franchise licence, the couple entered the real estate business.
Engel & Völkers Portimão is no ordinary real estate company! It is part of the large German group Engel & Völkers, a world leader in the luxury real estate sector, specialising in the purchase and sale of premium residential properties and commercial real estate.
As you might expect, the beginning of this journey proved extremely challenging: from the strategic choice of location for the shop, to the hiring of the first consultants, themselves pioneers who fully believed in the success of this ambitious project.
Wilfrid Hoos, CEO of Engel & Völkers Portimão, recalls that they had to hire the first real estate consultant in a café because the shop was not yet ready. The first meetings and contracts with clients were also held in the café.
Later, with the Monchique fires in 2018, and the Covid-19 pandemic, the difficulties in getting ahead accumulated and turned into challenges…fortunately overcome!
Today, Engel & Völkers Portimão is a renowned real estate company in the region, whose differentiation is based on the fact that it operates in the luxury market, but also on the fact that its objective is "not mass sales, but quality", as Wilfrid Hoos explains: "quality in the properties and quality in the real estate consultants".

These are the proud words of Félix Bach, Sales Director of Engel & Völkers Portimão. The growth in sales volume recorded from 2021 to 2022 was 100%, which positioned the agency in 4th place in 2022, and in 3rd place in the first quarter of 2023 in the Engel & Völkers Portugal group. It's a case of saying, with no lack of modesty, that the Portimão agency "is on the right track, in a period of very positive growth".
Even with the slowdown in the worldwide property markets in the first quarter of this year, Engel & Völkers Portimão continues its positive growth trend. Amongst several factors, this is due to the fact that only 20% of its clients take out a bank loan, as well as the dedication and focus of the whole team.
The massive investment in offline and online marketing highlighted the Engel & Völkers Portimão brand in the region, but the trust of the customers - homeowners and buyers - was also undoubtedly a success factor.
The Sales Director of Engel & Völkers Portimão, Félix Bach, says that customers show "high satisfaction for the economic value of the transaction, but also for the trust that the brand conveys, and for its consultants, which makes them come back again and again.
The great percentage of Engel & Völkers' clients in Portimão are of German origin - but the estate agency also has clients from the rest of Europe, namely France, the United Kingdom, Holland and, of course, Portugal. It has even noted the growing interest of clients from the United States and Brazil.
Independently of their origin, Engel & Völkers Portimão's clients are always satisfied, and Wilfrid Hoos, the project's mentor, explains why: "more than selling or buying houses, we care about people's motivations and life projects, because a house is a home, and not a set of four walls". That's why business in the real estate market is always very sensitive and emotional and the agencies that stand out are those that, more than just selling properties, help clients make their dreams come true.
