Welcome to Vienna! The former imperial city attracts millions of tourists every year with its sights. Vienna today is a vibrant, modern metropolis with over 1.8 million inhabitants, unique cultural highlights and breathtakingly beautiful architecture. The area around the Austrian capital also offers many attractive destinations. During the weekends not only the Viennese like to escape the hectic city to the green, partly mountainous countryside. Here you can find many destinations for weekend trips. In the following article you will learn everything about the relaxation and excursion possibilities in Lower Austria.
Only a few kilometres away from the Styrian border is the Mendlingtal adventure world. During a hike on the theme trail from the meadow to the village pond, enjoy the fresh air by the wild stream and the green nature around it. The Rax Alpine Garden is a sporty excursion for all those who want to reach high altitudes, almost 1,600 metres above sea level. For the way up there is a cable car, and for the way down there are hiking trails for advanced hikers. A special highlight is the Alpine Garden. The most beautiful plants in the Alps grow on an area of around 4,000 square metres. They have been planted here and are cared for to preserve the species.
Besides an impressive nature you will also find numerous castles and fortresses in Lower Austria. More than 70 of these are situated throughout the region. Many have been renovated and are open for public visitors in recent decades. A visit to these old buildings is like a journey through the countries history. For example, in the municipality of Schollach in southern Lower Austria, lies the Schallaburg dating back to the Renaissance period. From Vienna you can reach the mighty castle in about one hour by car. Throughout the year, a wide variety of events and exhibitions take place here.
Not all castles are freely accessible, many are privately owned. The “Silbererschlössl” castle home of the journalist, politician and aviation pioneer Victor Silberer is now on sale in Semmering in Lower Austria. The native Austrian had the castle built in 1893 in the same style as the Bavarian royal residence “Neuschwanstein”. Like the world-famous castle that inspired the “Silbererschlössl”, this castle is graced with architectural features typical of the Neo-Gothic – including lancet windows, turrets with pointed roofs, and bright stained glass windows. The property presides over nine bedrooms in total, as well as a banquet hall featuring columns, wooden panelling and a coffered ceiling. Not far from Vienna, the castle is situated at about 960 metres above sea level, embedded in the idyllic mountain world of the Semmering Pass.
Semmering, also known as "Vienna's local mountain", has been a popular holiday destination of the Viennese society since the 19th century. Even Emperor Charles I enjoyed spending his holidays in this climatic health resort. Even today the region is attractive for tourists due to its beauty as well as its leisure and relaxation facilities. In the immediate vicinity is the Zauberberg with the famous Ski World Cup race track, a popular destination for hikers, skiers and bikers. Unique to the ski area are the 6 night slopes with night lighting, which guarantee a very special ski adventure.
Besides the beautiful landscapes a trip to Lower Austria is also worthwhile due to its culinary diversity. The regional cuisine offers gourmets the agony of choice. While cheese fans enjoy the "Traisentaler Hofkas", fish lovers will be delighted by the Waldviertel carp. A classicdish in the Austrian cuisine is the "Brettljausen", a cold cuts platter with regional meat and sausage delicacies and classic brown bread. Jause means in Austrian as much as a small break or snack. The popular "Frittaten soup", which is also known elsewhere as "Flädle soup", is a clear beef broth with hearty strips of herbal eggcake. Also known for the region are the poppy noodles made of potato dough. The potato noodles are panned in butter and poppy seed and sprinkled with sugar.
