Former home of Karl Lagerfeld in Hamburg goes on sale

The Engel & Völkers Market Center Hamburg Elbe is now brokering “Villa Jako” in the city’s Blankenese district for 10 million euros. The property was owned by the renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld between 1991 and 1998. It is impressively designed in the style of a Roman villa, and enjoys a unique location with unobstructable views of the River Elbe.

Grand architecture with outstanding design features

The villa is set on a hillside plot spanning almost 12,000 square metres in the exclusive Blankenese area of Hamburg. Its impressive façade with columns and the building’s ground plan are inspired by the classical design of a Roman villa. Striking symmetry and grand dimensions are also indicative of this style. The interior living space on offer is 443 square metres in total, set over two main floors and a lower-ground level. An atrium at the centre of the house has a gallery on the first floor above and opens on to three reception rooms. The living room spans 80 square metres and stretches the entire length of the property. With its ceilings lavishly decorated in golf leaf and soaring up to six metres high, this room evokes the sense of a stately hall. Round-arched glass doorways open directly onto the garden and terrace, and make the most of the river views, which cannot be obstructed in any way. The first-floor gallery also serves as a library. It leads on to three bedrooms, each featuring an en suite bathroom and dressing room. Every room is individual and exclusive in design, culminating in an overall atmosphere of eclectic splendour. Some elements of Karl Lagerfeld’s interior design of the property in Hamburg are preserved to this day.

The ninety-year history of Karl Lagerfeld’s villa in Hamburg

The shipping underwriter Herrmann Witte commissioned the construction of the property in the early 1920s. Walter Baedeker was the architect responsible for the design of the original single-storey villa, who rose to prominence above all with his signature mansions in Hamburg’s Blankenese district. Around a decade after its completion, the villa was purchased by the lawyer Alfred Schüler. He commissioned Baedeker again – this time to add another storey to the property. The former “Villa Schüler” remained in the same family for 50 years, until it was acquired by the next owner Karl Lagerfeld at the beginning of the 1990s. Karl Lagerfeld renamed the property “Villa Jako” and had it refurbished by the celebrated Hamburg-based art conservator Renate Kant.
