This modernist take on a mountain chalet was designed by Herbert Bayer, an eminent member of the Bauhaus art, design and architecture movement. Bayer, at the invitation of industrialist Walter Paepcke, moved to Aspen to design the Aspen Institute, the Aspen Meadows and a handful of residential properties. This home was the first to be designated by the City of Aspen as "modern historic."The three-bedroom, two-bath cedar-clad, residence exemplifies the fundamentals of the Bauhaus movement--simplicity, openness and efficiency, where form follows function. This home was the first to be designated by the City of Aspen as "modern historic".The three bedroom, two bath cedar-clad house exemplifies the fundamentals of the Bauhaus movement--simplicity, openness and efficiency, where there is no distinction between form and function. It is located in the exclusive, quiet West End, under a 10 minute walk to the city's core and just over a block from the Cross Town shuttle stop. It is less than a 5 minute walk to the Aspen Festival music tent and Harris Hall, and adjacent to Triangle Park. The split level design was oriented on the land to take advantage of light from the east and the south, and to use the natural insulation of the earth to heat or cool the lower bedroom level, which has all above-grade windows. The upper level features an open kitchen with an island, a dining room which comfortably seats 6-8 and an open living room with a real wood-burning fireplace. There are built-in shelves and cabinets throughout the upstairs including a full size Murphy bed and closet, cleverly concealed in the cedar paneling along one wall of the living area. There are original artworks and mid-century furnishings to complement the architectural style. Sliding glass doors open to a generous deck with a lovely shared yard and a mountain view.Downstairs features three bedrooms, including the en suite master bath with tub/shower, one bedroom with a twin convertible to a king bed and a twin trundle in the third bedroom. The second bathroom has a shower and an authentic Swedish sauna. This is the perfect choice for renters valuing openness but total privacy and a warm, peaceful ambiance. Rates from $850.00/night.
