“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela
CHOC calls on our communities to help us make a difference in the lives of the children and families affected by childhood cancer or a life threatening blood disorder by selecting CHOC as your 2017 Mandela Day initiative. Our Mandela Day campaign focuses on CHOC’s Accommodation Programme. This year alone (July 2016 to June 2017), CHOC Houses in Cape Town offered a place to 164 children and their caregivers to stay during their intensive treatment period that can last up to 3 years. Being situated close to the paediatric oncology treatment centres, the CHOC houses services children and families coming from the feeder areas of these hospitals, which extends from metropolitan to remote rural areas throughout the Western Cape and Namakwa. Our home away from home provides free accommodation and transport to and from the hospitals for these families. This assists in somewhat alleviating the emotional and financial toll that cancer takes. Please take 5 minutes of your time to read more about our Mandela Day Campaign – see below.
