The Market Place

cape town markets

Cape Town is a city which positively reverberates to the beat of creativity, be that artistic, musical, literary or culinary… with everything in between. Little wonder, then, that there is an abundance of fora in which the wares of those people who devote their time to crafting goodies that the rest of us can enjoy can be displayed and purchased! The joy of markets is that, in contrast to some of the other wonderful pastimes in which Capetonians can indulge, they are all weather, all year round places.

Here, just a small selection of those in our licence area:

Oranjezicht City Farm

This buzzing community market serves the dual purpose of allowing local producers to bring their delicious wares to sell, and being a tantalizing smorgasbord of goodies for brunch/lunch. Everything from ethical chocolate to honey, edible plants and seedlings to artisan baskets. Delicious aromas permeate the air, and dogs (providing on lead and well behaved) are welcome. It is also extremely child friendly, with activities ranging from story telling to face painting and craft sessions.

Where: currently located in Granger Bay for the winter but normally at Leeuenhof, Hof Street, Oranjezicht.

When: Saturday, 9am - 2pm. Closed during the festive period.

Bay Harbour Market, Hout Bay

Famed for its great location, hovering at the edge of the sea at the foot of the famous Hangberg Mountain, this fabulous market occupies a once abandoned factory space. More than 100 traders call it home at the weekend, producing a dazzling array of beautifully fashioned jewellery, garments and art works, and genuinely espousing the ethos of sustainable living. The food, though, is something else, with some twenty or more culinary wizards offering seafood, pizza, speciality soups, middle eastern cuisine, gourmet cakes and plenty more.

Where: 31 Harbour Road, Hout Bay

When: Friday Nite LIVE, (with live music) 5 - 9pm | Saturday and Sunday – 9.30am – 4pm

V & A Food Market, V & A Waterfront

The V & A Food Market is one of Cape Town's leading retail food stores and is the only food market operating 7 days a week, including public holidays. Wet your whistle with delicious artisanal street stands serving a magnificent spectrum of flavours.

Where: the Pumphouse building, off Nobel Square

When: daily, 10am - 6pm. CLOSED CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS’ DAY

Neighbour Goods Market, Salt River

This trendy, lively Saturday market is THE place to hang. Soak up the atmosphere and indulge in gourmet burgers, waffles, funky pizza and a glass of bubbly. Stock up, too, on locally produced meats, cheeses, pates and oils.

Where: The Old Biscuit Mill complex, 373-375, Albert Road, Woodstock

When: Saturday, 9am - 2pm
