Budget friendly home deco tips

Just because you have to decorate your home on a tight budget, doesn’t mean you necessarily have to compromise on style.

Home deco Redecorating doesn't mean breaking the budget

Anton Odendaal from Rochester offers top tips on how to spruce up your space without breaking the bank: Work out your budget: the first thing that needs to be done for any effective makeover project is to clearly define your budget. “ Decide what you need, and where you desperately have to spend your money. If, for example, you need seating, then this will most probably be your major spend. However, if you already have seating, then perhaps the major portion of your budget will be spent on accessories, window coverings and rugs for example.

Each project is different, but it is imperative that you do your research on what things you need, and what they cost, in order to formulate a sound budget plan that you can realistically stick to,” says Odendaal. Choose a style and create a mood board: there is no room in your budget to make mistakes and buy items that don’t fit in with your scheme. As such, you need to meticulously work out what you do want and what you don’t want. Decide what you need, and where you desperately have to spend your money.

It is easy to be swept away with excitement and invest in items that appeal to you, but don’t necessarily fit in with the décor you have chosen – this can be disastrous for your budget. The best way to avoid this is to compile a mood board. Choose your desired style and colour palette before you set out shopping for the various items on your list. You can find inspiration by scouring décor magazines, books and websites, such as www.rochester.co.za or www.houzz.com for example.

Home dec Take your time when deciding what to do in your home

“Once you have decided on a style and colour palette, cut or print out any décor images that fit this theme. Sort through them, choose your favourites and formulate a moodboard. It should feature colour swatches that you are interested in, as well as settings that feature the look you are after. This moodboard will go a long way in helping you select items for your interior composition that complement one another.”

Splurge on a signature item: It is a good idea to splurge a good chunk of your budget on a signature item that you adore – something that you will be able to keep for a long time to come. These signature items usually form the centerpiece of your entire design, and are the starting points of a good composition. If you are on a budget, you need to choose the stores that you buy from cleverly.

Odendaal says whether it is a particular sofa or occasional chair, a piece of art, or a specific type of light fitting – the signature item in any décor composition will be the item that people will notice first when they walk into a room. It tends to set the tone of what is to come. Bear in mind however, that a signature piece need not be ridiculously expensive.

Compose your lighting: A good lighting composition can make all the difference in a space. The trick to achieving good lighting is to include various layers of light - incorporate an attractive pendant light in the centre of the room for ambient light for example, and then complement it with more focused lighting in the form of table and floor lamps. “Well appointed table or floor lamps can really make all the difference - finishing off the entire décor composition,” says Odendaal.

Home deco Simple clean lines and colours make an impact

Organise your space: One of the least expensive things to do in order to truly rejuvenate a space, is to purge yourself of any unused, unwanted, or unattractive items. “Once you have ruthlessly uncluttered a space, you can truly see what you have to work with. Good storage is an essential part of any sound interior design – look around for simple storage solutions that you can use to organise and store the items you need. For the items that you don’t want anymore – donate them to charity or sell them at a jumble sale or on a website like Gumtree, for example. This could be a good way of raising further cash for your makeover.”  Choose your desired style and colour palette before you set out shopping for the various items on your list.

Choose stylish accents and features: It’s the little things that make all the difference, says Odendaal. “It’s the finer details that can really set your décor scheme apart from the rest. Adding some trendy new décor accents is a quick and easy way of revitialising your interiors and giving them a fresh new look.”

Shop smart: If you are on a budget, you need to choose the stores that you buy from cleverly. “It’s no use shopping at high-end outlets, where you can’t afford anything. However, you don’t want to spend your hard earned cash on badly made, inferior quality items that will need replacing.”

Repainting revolution: A fresh coat of paint can do absolute wonders to spruce up a space. “If you are on a budget, your best bet would be to choose a light-coloured neutral hue, where you can easily change the colour palette of the room by changing the various accessories, instead of having to repaint the entire room,” advises Odendaal.
