School, sports jacket, social media - an interview with our trainee Fabian Urban

When Fabian Urban started his real estate agent training at Engel & Völkers in August 2016, it was clear from the start that he would complete the three-year training course within two years. An ambitious goal, considering the many different facets covered by such training. But the 22-year-old accepted the challenge and has since developed into a real estate expert par excellence. We spoke with Mr. Urban about personal initiative, training diversity and why Instagram should be part of every estate agent’s job description.

Hoedspruit - The real estate agent training at Engel & Völkers is challenging, versatile and exciting. Our trainee Fabian Urban reveals his path to success.

Hello Mr. Urban, please tell us what you did before joining Engel & Völkers.

After obtaining my secondary school certificate and undergoing vocational training as a confectionery technician, I completed my commercial high school diploma as the best of my class. I have thus completed four internships all in all, one of them being in real estate. This was my most exciting internship, as it required a lot of contact with clients. During this training, I became familiar with the daily work of a real estate agent, such as the preparation of exposés, meetings with clients and the drafting of rental agreements.

So you had already discovered your interest in sales?

Yes, even when I was still going to school I already worked and underwent my first training at a men’s outfitter. The work of an estate agent picks up where this left off and allows me to interact with clients in an enjoyable and rewarding way. Furthermore, real estate and architecture as well as interior design have always held a special fascination for me. Thus, the foundation was laid for this training. I see a lot of potential because the classic job description of a broker is changing. Especially since I am digitally savvy and also interested in online marketing, online sales and social media marketing. Of course, it is also important to be open to new service solutions if you want to survive in the market.

Why did you decide to join Engel & Völkers?

The name, the brand. Engel & Völkers was my first choice. The size of the company and its reputation were decisive.

What qualities do you need as a real estate agent trainee?

I think the overall package counts: You should be open, outgoing and have a well-groomed appearance. Professional expertise is also very important. There is nothing worse than being asked something about a property and only being able to answer one out of three questions. This should not happen. Actually, expertise is the most important factor. It is also an advantage if you are adept in social media and Office products and have technical skills.

Do you think that you will be working much with social media as a real estate agent?

I will definitely work with Instagram, as this is a good platform for presenting yourself. I do that in my private life and will continue doing so in my professional life in order to build up my real estate agent network.

What does your daily work as a trainee entail?

On Thursdays I go to vocational school, where I meet other budding real estate professionals from the areas of sales, rentals or property management. The main subject there is real estate management, which pertains to things such as floor plans, land registers, notarial contracts, etc.. Other subjects include financing and accounting, as well as business English. At Engel & Völkers, on the other hand, no day is like the next. Sometimes I might be out and about viewing properties all day, at other times I might be assessing the market value of a property, preparing an exposé or creating a 3D virtual tour of a property with the Matterport camera. Currently, I am also doing a lot of back office work.

Is it the versatility of the work that makes the job of an estate agent so appealing for you?

It’s at least one of the reasons why I decided to become an estate agent. I like a job that is flexible. This allows me to schedule and organise my work on my own and also get out of the office from time to time. Since being at the headquarters in Stadthausbrücke, I am learning a lot more about the day-to-day business. I have also acquainted myself with the Engel & Völkers content marketing team, carried out social media marketing and posted blog articles. In the future, I will get an insight into how commercial property is marketed, which is something I am really looking forward to.
