Five indirect lighting ideas to transform your home

Property experts are all in accordance: staging your home is one of the easiest ways to sell a property swiftly and for a higher price. As well as the vases of flowers and the other decorative additions that go into a professionally staged aesthetic, one of key considerations that's frequently overlooked during this process is light.

Rather than dousing your interiors with bright halogen bulbs, here are five indirect lighting ideas that will transform your home and provide a welcoming backdrop for a house viewing. 

Spread the light

When it comes to implementing indirect lighting ideas, the first step is to think about positioning. Rather than relying on the glow of a single, central bulb, place at least three different sources on alternative levels throughout each room of your house.

Lights can be split into three categories. The first is ambient lighting: this is the most widespread type, and will cast a light across most of the room. The second is accented lighting. Use this to highlight your favourite architectural or decorative features in your property. Finally, there's task lighting, which has practical uses for for chores such as reading or cooking.

Control the light

With our electrical devices becoming even smarter, there's more than just the position of the beam to decide when placing your lighting. The strength of each source should vary depending on the occasion, which can easily be done using dimmer switches either installed into the wall or controlled through a handheld device.

Take the light outdoors

Away from conventional indoor options, setting a particular mood can also be achieved outdoors using select indirect lighting ideas. Spotlights help to highlight certain garden features, such as focal plants or garden sculptures or water features.

Soft lighting in and around the pool will both highlight your pool as a central feature in your garden and create an ethereal glow amongst the foliage. The shapes cast by the water's surface also creates a slow pattern on any surrounding structures, which makes your poolside relaxation area even more calming.

Colour the light

As a final decorative touch, why not add a touch of colour to your lighting ideas? Lights with a soft hue work well when used to complement or accentuate certain architectural elements, such as textured walls or gothic features.
