Magical Ibala Bala is situated on a 742 hectare private reserve within the diverse Waterberg Biosphere in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. This area, in South Africa’s northernmost province, is steeped in legend and rich with tradition and culture, having once functioned as a gateway for trade between the people of South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Ibala Bala Lodge, which means Kudu in Ndebele, lies in a unique landscape of rolling hills, dense bushveld, rugged river valleys and the meandering Mogol River. Just a three-hour drive from Johannesburg and 20 minutes from the town of Lephalale, the lodge sleeps 28 in three bush camps and is tucked away in a lush oasis of trees with an abundance of game and birdlife.
The lodge consists of 3 camps namely the Hunting Camp (sleeps 12), Luxury Camp (sleeps 8) and the Homestead (sleeps 8) all enclosed by an electrified fence. The legacy of convergence is at the heart of Ibala Bala’s design which is a meeting of ancient and old school African styles drawn from across the continent and expressed by a composition of stone, wood and thatch sourced from the land.
The Hunting Camp embodies old safari, the stuff of hunting parties, living out our roguish fantasies and more or less camping in thatched rondavels, sitting around a campfire as the night skies light up with their expansive blanket of stars. Listening to the sounds of the African bush as the fiery necked nightjars herald the evening with their distinctive chant, while the howl of the jackals echo in the evening silence. The Hunting Camp consists of 4 private en-suite rondavels secluded amongst the trees around a central open plan kitchen, lounge, boma and pool.
A short distance away the Luxury Camp is a smaller intimate camp where you can experience the freedom of the bush and embrace a slower pace. Consisting of 2 private thatched chalets and an independent 2 bedroom family loft, all en-suite. A central open plan kitchen, lounge and boma area open onto a tranquil rim-flow pool. Indulge in an incredible open-air star bath while enjoying a glass of your favourite drink and the sounds of the bush from the comfort of a warm bubble bath. Greet the day with an early morning shower standing beneath the open skies taking in the fresh air and peaceful sounds of the bush. You can do as much or as little as you want, go on a game drive, walk, mountain bike in this diverse landscape or just lie on the deck next to the swimming pool beneath a wild fig tree soaking in the endless views. Time literally stands still here and the rhythms of nature take over.
Completing the trio of camps is The Homestead which is a complete spacious standalone home with an open plan kitchen, lounge and boma area. It can accommodate 8 people comfortably in 4 en-suite bedrooms.
The farm has been lovingly cared for by the current owners and is in a pristine condition. An extensive road network has been created for traversing this diverse landscape and for viewing the abundant wildlife. One of the highlights of this farm is a 21-strong pack of free ranging endangered African Wild Dogs. This is the last free ranging Wild Dog pack in Southern Africa.
