Travel Tuesday: Around Cape Town

Cape Town is one of the most popular destinations in South Africa. Golden sandy beaches, international residents and a fascinating landscape make the city a unique excursion destination. In 2014 the New York Times appointed Cape Town “Destination of the Year”. But the area around the thriving city is also very much worth a visit. Our tips will make your holiday a unique, unforgettable experience.

Travel Tuesday: Around Cape Town

Visit the famous vineyards by bicycle

You can easily take part in an organised cycle tour from Cape Town to the vineyards. A tour through wonderful mountainous landscapes, rural idylls, rounded off with wine-tasting is just as good as it sounds. Book an all-inclusive tour which includes travel to the location, cycle hire and the wine-tasting and enjoy wonderful Mother Nature in all her glory. Have you sampled South Africa's famous Pinotage wines? At Spier Wine Farm, which is over 300 years old, you can discover this smoky wine and find out more about its production.

Robben Island

The historic island off Cape Town's coast is home to the former prison in which Nelson Mandela was held for over 18 years. The half-hour crossing on the ferry to Africa's most famous prison is impressive in itself and provides a unique view of Cape Town's skyline. No other place is so closely linked to the history of South Africa than Robben Island. The prison has been a museum since 1997, with the island being a symbol of the suppression that took place during Apartheid.

A trip to Simon's Town

Take a train along the spectacular coastline to Simon's Town. The small town is just one hour from Cape Town and the train journey is an experience all of its own. You can travel on the MetroRail or AtlanticRail, a steam train dating back to the twenties. The view over the ocean during the trip over the Cape Peninsula is absolutely breath-taking. The small town is home to lots of museums, from the railway to the toy museum and there are also plenty of picturesque walks in the area. Our tip: Between July and August you will have a great chance of seeing whales to the north of Simon's Town.

Nature at its best in the Okavango Delta

The famous Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. Water, savannah and sand landscapes and a wide variety of flora and fauna make the delta a unique natural paradise. A trip to it will be a great contrast to the cosmopolitan centre of Cape Town. It can be reached by a two and a half hour flight from Cape Town. There are more than 550 unique animal and bird species in the oasis. If you are brave enough, you can spend a night in a tent and watch the animals as the sun rises.

In view of all these sights in and around Cape Town, it will not come as a surprise that property in this area is so popular. If you are considering an investment here, contact the Engel & Völkers Shop in Cape Town.
