A most prestigious guest house in Tulbagh

When a devastating earthquake struck Tulbagh in 1969, 28 buildings of historic value in Church Street were seriously damaged but have been accurately restored in an extensive restoration project. Inclusive to the property is a separate apartment consisting of a bedroom, bathroom and living room which allows for total privacy. In 1974 the whole of the restored street was declared a national monument.
One such property which is now for sale, dates from the 1850’s, and also became the first boarding house in Tulbagh in 1885, hence the name De Oude Herberg (The Old Boarding House). Eventually the property lost its original character, but during the restoration process almost a hundred years later, the building was restored to its original unobtrusive splendour. The veranda and stoep pillars were removed, The pointed gables and the thatched roof were rebuilt over the old house, and the wooden floors, ceilings, wooden doors and window frames were retained and could be shown off once again in their pristine condition. The stoep was restored with plastered front and stone paving, with steps leading to the front door.
The interior offers 5 tastefully decorated bedrooms, each with its private bathroom, a chef’s kitchen, numerous storage rooms, living areas reminiscent of a gentleman’s club in the heart of London, an outdoor patio with a swimming pool.
