Ópera prima by Gaudí

After 130 years as a private residence, Casa Vicens, one of Barcelona’s nine emblematic word heritage sites, celebrates its first anniversary of being open to the public. Designed as a complete work of art by the very young Antoni Gaudí, the building - until now a closely guarded secret - is interestingly enough one of the last of Gaudí’s masterpieces in Barcelona to be opened to the public.

MoraBanc, the building’s proprietor, was faced with the challenge of preserving the authenticity of Gaudí while at the same time complying with municipal urban regulations to ensure the accessibility and security of the property. Throughout the restoration of this world heritage site house, the team in charge found many hidden details of Gaudí that had become hidden or disfigured over the years, which needed to be repaired to return them to their original appearance. Only now can the visitor understand the architectural language and the evolution of modernism in Barcelona. Thanks to the comprehensive and careful refurbishment of Gaudí’s first creation, the architects who took on the restoration of Casa Vicens, José Antonio Martínez Lapeña, Elías Torres and David García, have been named as finalists in the 60th edition of the FAD Awards for Architecture and Interior Design.

Beyond the spectacle of the actual building, Casa Vicens also has a permanent exhibition - and a temporary one - which takes a closer look at the social and cultural context of Barcelona during the years of its design and construction. It looks at the early stages of the young architect Gaudí and finally at Casa Vicens itself, its subsequent development and the way in which the method, art, structure and ornamentation come together to form one single entity. For this reason, this house museum should be experienced at your own pace. The infinite details and countless surprises that hide around each and every corner are to be explored and enjoyed at your leisure.
