With 2017 waiting on the horizon, it's time for change in the interior design world. After a few years of minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired open spaces in our homes, interior trends in 2017 are set to make new year's resolutions and shake up our accepted aesthetics.
The new year is bringing some exciting design shifts in its wake, with a move towards bold colours, warm materials and cosy living. Here, we take a sneak peak at a selection of the coming year's home décor trends.
Crack open the paint tins: our wall colour palettes for the new year are looking warmer, bolder and more intense than ever before. The paint company Benjamin Moore has recently released their colour of the year for 2017, and, in contrast to last year's 'Simply White', they have chosen 'Shadow': a deep and rich purple shade. Forest greens are equally on the rise, either as a matte wall colour, or in bold furniture choices scattered about the room.
Team your chosen dramatic wall colour with dark wooden furniture to complete this sophisticated look.
The natural materials of 2016 are here to stay, even if there is a slight alteration in the pecking order. Terracotta tiling in bathrooms, kitchens and outdoors is making a comeback, as is the use of cork. Opt for either a simple cork noticeboard, or else clad an entire wall in the material to really embrace the interior trends of 2017. Not only will cork offer a warm tone and some natural texturing, it's also a handy place to display notes and decorations.
With the continued rise of connected devices and the internet of things in the home, we seem to be increasingly surrounded by the input of technology. The demand for smart devices isn't necessarily universal: instead, many of us want to use our homes as a place to escape to and have some alone time.
Interior trends for 2017 look set to include peaceful and 'un-connected' spaces, where comfort takes centre stage. Expect low-slung, deep sofas, chunky-knit rugs and throws, and a lack of electronic devices. Wave goodbye to the open plan living room of the past few years; the future is small, intimate and cosy.
Bringing the outdoors inside your home isn't exactly a new trend, but it sure isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Plants bring clean oxygen into a room and some even help to clean the air around them, as well as adding a splash of colour to the space. For 2017, house plants are likely to follow a desert theme. Low maintenance succulent plants come in all shapes and sizes to fit snuggly into your home, while space-hogging spider plants are on their way out. Once again, trends are embracing the colourful over the dull.
For larger displays, consider putting together a collection of hardy succulents and cacti. Free-draining, dry soil is an absolute must. Team your desert plants with boldly coloured pots, or even ones made from terracotta, to combine some 2017 trends.
