The capital of the Sicilian province, sharing the same name, with a population of nearly 400,000 inhabitants in the city and approximately 1 million inhabitants throughout the province, Catania rises between the Ionian Sea and the southern slopes of Mt. Etna, on the gulf with the same name, north of Simeto river mouth and Catania Plain. The city is served by the international airport Vincenzo Bellini, the fifth in Italy as passengers’ traffic (approximately 10 million in 2018) and by the port, currently a hub for numerous shipping and cruise companies. It is also the only city in Southern Italy to be served by the constantly expanding subway network. Always considered the “Milan of the South”, Catania is one of the liveliest commercial cities in southern Italy. For some years it has been subject to considerable tourist growth thanks to the new port and airport infrastructures able to accommodate flows of visitors from all over the world. Always the first regional city with restaurants and nightlife, Catania is also considered the capital of southern Italy’s nightlife.
