Location: Levie, Corsica
The Mediterranean island of Corsica is the fourth-largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia and Cyprus. It consists largely of a high mountain range and lies west of the Apennine Peninsula, north of Sardinia and southeast of the French Riviera. The island has belonged to France since 1768, but is closer to Italy than to mainland France. In addition to French, Corsican— a Romance variety closely related to Italian— is also spoken on Corsica. Customs and cuisine likewise partly reflect the proximity to Italy. Corsica has an area of 8,760 km² and around 360,000 inhabitants. In places, Corsica rises as a mountainous landscape from depths of 2,500 m below sea level. About 24 km off the west coast, the island reaches its highest elevation in the Monte Cinto massif (2,706 m). The terrain morphology allows numerous vistas and gave Corsica the nickname “Mountains in the Sea.” Due to the many bays, especially on the island’s west side, Corsica has a coastline over 1,000 km long. One third consists of beaches; the rest is rocky. A Corsica vacation offers a mix of stunning beaches and rugged mountain scenery—perfect for hikers and water-sports enthusiasts. The best time to travel is May to October. Corsica is ideal for families, active holidaymakers and nature lovers, and can be reached by plane or ferry. Levie is a municipality and belongs to the Sartène arrondissement in the Corse-du-Sud department, and can be reached from Vignalella in about 45 minutes by car. Levie itself impresses with its authentic village character, stone houses and narrow lanes. At the same time, it is an ideal starting point for outdoor activities such as hiking or trips to historical sites such as the nearby prehistoric site of Cucuruzzu and the statue menhirs of Capula and Aravina. From Vignalella it is about 15 km to Sartène with its shopping options. Sartène can be reached in about 20 minutes by car. To the west coast, with the small port town of Propriano and its beautiful bays and beaches, it is about 28 km and 35 minutes by car. You can reach the capital, Ajaccio, with its international airport—known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and a cultural center with a historic old town on the west coast on the Gulf of Ajaccio—in about 2 hours by car. Corsica’s southeast coast with its charming Porto-Vecchio is about 35 km, or 60 minutes by car.
