Location: Viggiù, Lombardy
Viggiù is a municipality in the northeast of the province of Varese, more precisely in the Valceresio, at the foot of Monte Orsa, with a population of about 5,300 inhabitants. Its history dates back to ancient times, as evidenced by Roman-era artifacts. Viggiù is rich in treasures, including its unique historic center characterized by typical courtyard houses with entrances adorned by artistic stone portals, where stonemason workshops were once located. The famous "Pietra di Viggiù" was one of the many stones extracted from the surrounding hills; it was used as construction and decorative material, which in the past made the area a place of great artistic importance. This characteristic earned Viggiù the nickname "Picasass town," as in the past, walking through the streets, one could hear the constant chimes of hammers striking stone. There are also many churches enriched by the works of local artists. In the heart of the town, amidst a charming green setting, stands Villa Borromeo, an elegant late neoclassical building, an ideal destination for daily excursions.
