Panicale: one of the most beautiful villages in Italy

Between the valley of the Trasimeno Lake and the Valley of the Nestore rises a small medieval suburb of hardly 6.000 inhabitants that embraces the Umbria and the southern Tuscany: Panicale.

In many people have questioned on the etymology of its name trying to find the real meaning: for some it derives from the Latin "Pani Calet" that means "place where they burn are to the god Pan", for the more poetic from the Greek "Pani Kalon" that means "where everything is beautiful", while others lead back the origin of the name to the cultivation of the "panico", "Pan Colis", from as the two ears of the heraldic coat of arms.

The history narrates that the origins of Panicale are very ancient. It seems that already beginning from the II^ millennium a.C. various people began to occupy the city for its extremely strategic position both from an environmental and military point of view, settling there and building one of the most characteristic medieval suburbs of Italy.

During the Renaissance Panicale has known its maximum economic and cultural splendor. Thanks to prestigious artists such as Perugino and his pupils were realized remarkable works of art. It was Pope Paolo III Farnese, during one of his travels, to praise the city defining it "Terra insigne" to value its precious artistic and cultural patrimony.

In 1037 Panicale became the first free commune of Italy.

Walking through the streets of the village you can see the "heraldic" coat of arms of Panicale.

In the right part of the coat of arms is represented the Castle of Panicale that for its privileged position is defined from the more the "terrace of the Lake Trasimeno"; to the left, instead, we find the Grifo perugino to testimony of the innumerable battles fought to the side of Perugia.

Between the most famous enterprises it cannot be forgotten the memorable "defense of Perugia", assaulted of the Bretons in 1378 and freed also thanks to a brave inhabitant of Panicale of name Boldrino Paneri (1331-1391).

It was thanks to this victorious conquest that Perugia, in sign of gratitude, granted to Panicale to use the symbol of the Grifo.

The village of Panicale still preserves its ancient historical center surrounded by a powerful city wall "guarded" by ten towers and a characteristic subdivision of the inhabited area with circular shapes headed by three distinct and separate squares: the Piazza del Comune, at the bottom; the square dominated by the church of the Collegiata, at the center and the Piazza del Podestà, at the top.

Between the walls there are the two doors: the Perugina and the Fiorentina, respectively turned towards Perugia and towards Florence.

In 2008 Panicale was named one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and since 2007 it boasts the brand of Orange Flag of the TCI, a recognition of quality tourism and environmental areas of the hinterland with a population of less than 15 thousand inhabitants.

Among the many things to see we recommend first of all the "Santuario della Madonna di Mongiovino", a true treasure trove of art between the Renaissance and Mannerism where tradition places the apparition of the Madonna to a shepherdess of the place. The Sanctuary has been completely restored in 2000 and presents, among the numerous works, a portal sculpted by Bernardino da Siena in 1532-34, as well as several very interesting paintings by Niccolò Circignani called Pomarancio (1569-70), by the Flemish painters Johannes Wraghe (1567) and Arrigo Van der Broeck (1564-87) and by Giovan Battista Lombardelli (1587-89).

Always in the surroundings, at 4 km from Tavernelle, you can visit the Santuario delle Grondici, immersed in the green and destination of pilgrimages.  This Sanctuary was built in dedication to the Madonna who cures the sick, of which it preserves an image considered miraculous, painted on canvas in 1495 by Gregorio Teutonico.
