What you should know about this plot of land

Special features of this plot of land

In the heart of the expansive African Karoo lies Elandspoort Farm, where the soul of Africa gently weaves its way into your heart and leaves an everlasting impression. Here, the rolling mountains and sprawling plains create a breathtaking vista, stretching to the very curvature of the earth and meeting the distant horizon in a seamless embrace. As the sun dips below this majestic landscape, a dramatic transformation unfolds. The night sky, in its inky blackness, becomes a canvas for a million twinkling stars, unveiling the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Milky Way in full splendour. The Southern Cross and distant galaxies, almost unparalleled in their clarity, are strewn across the heavens, offering views that transcend time and space. Elandspoort Farm is a journey into the heart of Africa, where every moment is a vivid reminder of the continent's unspoiled beauty and the indelible mark it leaves on your soul.

Elandspoort Game and Stock Farm, sprawling over 5000 hectares, is discreetly tucked away amidst two impressive mountain ranges in the diverse and unique landscape of the Little Karoo, between Uniondale and the renowned Baviaanskloof World Heritage Site. At Elandspoort, there is an overwhelming sense of space and solitude, offering a deep connection with the unspoiled environment.

Elandspoort Farm offers a tranquil getaway that also serves as a multifaceted agricultural and wildlife haven. The farm accommodates 26 guests across three distinctive homesteads: the Main Homestead and the Manager's House, each housing 8 guests, and the River Lodge, which can comfortably accommodate 10. Elandspoort's design reflects its versatile functionality, encompassing game and hunting, livestock breeding and crop farming. It embodies a legacy of convergence, combining practicality and aesthetic appeal. The farm's design, inspired by ancient and traditional Karoo styles, utilises natural materials like stone, wood, and reeds, sourced directly from the land. This approach not only honours the farm's varied activities but also harmonises with its commitment to agriculture and wildlife conservation, seamlessly blending with the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.

The Main Homestead of Elandspoort, adorned with its iconic windmill, stands as a testament to the owner's dedication to preserving its heritage and integrity. This exquisite home, with origins dating back 200 years, has been lovingly restored, maintaining most of its original features. The stonework on the Karoo stoep has been beautifully exposed, revealing the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The stoep, a quintessential element of Karoo life, boasts an iconic red door framed by black sash windows. Above the door, a stone emblem of an Eland symbolises the farm's identity and heritage. Life at Elandspoort unfolds on this stoep, where meals are enjoyed around a table or relaxation takes place on comfortable seating, all set against the backdrop of breathtaking views of the endless tracts of land stretching to distant mountains.

Inside, the homestead is a sanctuary of cool, calm elegance. The decor, a contemporary take on traditional Karoo style, is a testament to the owner's impeccable taste. Original yellowwood floors are adorned with animal skin rugs, while ball-and-claw tables, chic leather sofas, and iconic lighting suspended from restored wooden beams create an ambiance of Karoo luxury. The bathrooms are uniquely outfitted with copper piping repurposed from old steam trains, and the kitchen features original, painted Karoo tiles.

The interior of the homestead brims with a nostalgic charm, showcasing a rich collection of South African antiques, each lovingly restored and seamlessly integrated into the space. The four bedrooms are a study in understated Karoo elegance, with soft, desaturated colours, luxurious fabrics, and hand-crocheted bed covers. The lounge area, cosy with a fireplace, is perfect for winter evenings, while dining takes place around an antique wooden table, its chairs upholstered in fine ostrich leather. In warmer weather, the verandah becomes the heart of the home, offering meals and relaxation on soft, comfortable sofas, completing the experience of living in this beautifully restored piece of Karoo heritage.

A short distance away, River Lodge at Elandspoort is crafted to provide an authentic bush experience, all the while operating entirely off-grid with solar power and gas. Here guests gather around a crackling campfire under a sky ablaze with stars, where the evening is welcomed by the distinctive chant of fiery necked nightjars and the haunting echoes of jackals in the stillness. Positioned with an elevated view of the Olifants River, the lodge comprises the River House, which features a central open-plan kitchen, lounge and bar. This communal space leads to a boma, an outdoor area perfect for soaking in the views over the river. Accommodation includes three bedrooms within the River House, each thoughtfully designed to blend comfort with the rustic charm of the lodge. Additionally, two luxury ensuite tents are discreetly secluded amongst the trees, offering a closer connection with nature.

Rounding off the trio of homesteads is the Manager's House, a standalone property designed in the classic thatched rondavel style offering a picturesque setting with a tranquil dam and sweeping mountain vistas. This spacious home skillfully combines traditional aesthetics with modern comforts and is fully equipped to comfortably accommodate up to 8 people in its 4 bedrooms. The Manager's House serves as the operational heart of the farm. It includes essential farm facilities in a cluster of out buildings such as store rooms, a workshop, cold room, and an office with a reception area. It includes a large shed with parking bays and spaces designated for farming equipment, making it the central hub for the farm's daily activities.

Sometimes it’s simply being in vast spaces that soothes our senses and speaks to our soul. There’s a lot of that in this special place. Not only is there space to the horizons and beyond, but there’s majestic wildlife that roam freely in this iconic Karoo landscape. The presence of ancient rock art on the farm offers a glimpse into a rich historical tapestry. Here, endangered Cape Mountain zebras and rare sable antelopes coexist with a myriad of other species, from eland, gemsbok and kudu to blesbuck, nyala and springbuck. Add giraffe and the elusive aardvark and you can enjoy spectacular, safe game watching. Spanning 3380 hectares, the designated game area is securely fenced, while 92 hectares are devoted to stock farming, blending conservation with sustainable agriculture. The farm also features lush lucerne fields, enhancing its agricultural richness and offering a verdant contrast to the rugged Karoo landscape.

This is a magical place where freedom reigns to safely roam and explore with every activity steeped in the idyllic beauty of the Karoo.
