Home decor

British textile designer and poet William Morris said, “If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Home decor is a way of bringing a hint of your own personality to your space, creating a home that makes you feel comfortable and content. You can design individual rooms differently, or carry a theme throughout your entire house. And it doesn’t have to remain static; it is something you can play with continually or refine year after year. Here we will look at two key rooms found in most homes, and how you can fill them with your own decorative touches, from furnishings to trinkets.

Home decor: Luxurious living rooms

The living room is probably one of the areas you spend the most time in. Here it’s all about luxury, comfort and maximising space. A variety of elegant textiles are key to creating a relaxing atmosphere: rounded sofas piled high with duck feather colour-matched cushions that mould to your body when you lounge on them. Add to that hand-knotted rugs that sprawl in front of the fireplace, floor to ceiling tab top curtains to keep the heat in and the elements out, and velvety throws to wrap up in on a cold winter’s night.

Keep your home decor personal in the living room by displaying items that are special to you. This may mean family portraits, treasured gifts, souvenirs from your travels or abstract ornaments, all of which will enhance your space.

Decorate your bedroom

The bedroom is one of the more personal rooms in your home; it is an area that particularly suits a soothing decor, particularly through the use of delicate lighting, varied textiles and muted tones.

Choose textiles that are soft and luxurious to create a sense of relaxation – warm hues also bring peace and serenity into the bedroom to help you sleep.

Lighting is vital and key to creating the perfect ambiance, so choose wisely. Carefully consider that this room is used for reading, relaxing and, of course, sleeping. Your choices may depend on the natural lighting in the room, but there are always always to brighten a dark room. This could mean understated uplighters or Moroccan lanterns, paper pendants or crystal chandeliers.

The final step in any bedroom is to add features of interest. By that, we mean choosing the right wall art – a key aspect of home decoration. Mirrors, clocks and wall decals are both practical and aesthetically pleasing decorating ideas.

So what’s left? The kitchen, bathroom, maybe a guest room, a conservatory filled with greenery and even a basement – every room can be decorated in a way that fits your needs and your personality. There are heaps of home decoration hints and tips out there to inspire you. For more home decor ideas, check out our blog at Engel & Völkers.
