Blanes is a city in the comarca of La Selva, in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. During Roman rule it was called Blanda or Blandae. It is known as the “Gateway to the Costa Brava.” The coastline is part of the Costa Brava, which stretches from Blanes to the French border. The municipality covers an area of 18.29 km². Blanes is a tourist city known above all for the “concurs de focs d'artifici” during the “Santa Anna festival.” This event is in fact a fireworks competition, but throughout the week the city council organizes other activities in the city, as it is a week of celebrations in Blanes. Other points of interest are the botanical gardens, coves such as Cala Bona, and beaches surrounded by mountains. Blanes is only 1 hour from Barcelona Airport and about 40 minutes from Girona Airport. One of Blanes’ botanical gardens is Mar i Murtra, which covers almost 15 hectares, includes more than 4,000 different plant species, and is visited each year by 300,000 people. Another garden is Pinya de Rosa, which has more than 7,000 different plant species. The city offers countless activities and sports clubs, including the famous Club de Vela Blanes, founded in 1943, which has since evolved into one of the most important sailing clubs on the Costa Brava.
