Colonia del Sacramento is a city in the southwest of Uruguay, by the Río de la Plata, opposite Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is one of the oldest cities in Uruguay and the capital of the Colonia department. The Barrio Sur, Historic District of Colonia del Sacramento, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995, is the internationally recognized tourist attraction of the department. Colonia del Sacramento has preserved its original characteristics according to its very special colonial history. Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese Manuel Lobo, the city switched from Portuguese to Spanish rule several times, until the Declaration of Independence in 1825. These events made the colonial capital grow into a melting pot of architectural styles where Portuguese colonial-style buildings and Spanish houses stand right next to each other. Its houses, cobbled streets, typical lanterns, and magical sunsets have enchanted visitors since the last century. The Puerta del Campo, the Calle de los Suspiros, the lighthouse, the art galleries, and other historical sites make you feel like you are walking through history brought back to life.
