The name of Pocitos originates from the early 19th century when the area was used by laundresses who made small wells ("Pocitos") next to a freshwater stream that was later named Arroyo de los Pocitos. It is one of the main neighborhoods of the Uruguayan capital and is characterized by apartment buildings of ten to twenty stories that border the Río de la Plata and coexist with some older constructions. It is one of the places chosen by the upper-middle and upper classes of Uruguay, as well as by young people who wish to become independent, facilitated by the wide range of different apartments available. In Pocitos, there are various gastronomic, service, and infrastructure establishments, making it an urban hub of particular distinction. It is urban, modern, and comprehensive in its offerings, which has made it the most densely populated neighborhood in Montevideo, according to the census conducted in 2011.
