Pretoria is situated in the northeast of South Africa, it was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius, to be the new capital of the South African Republic.

Church Square originally Market Square, is the square at the historic centre of the city of Pretoria. It was named for the church buildings that stood at the centre of the square from 1856 to 1905. The statue of the late Boer leader and president of South Africa, Paul Kruger, is its most prominent feature. On the lower level of the platforms are four Boer soldiers, who surround the Kruger statue.

The Voortrekker Monument is a massive granite structure located on a hilltop, and was raised to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. Designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk, the Voortrekker Monument was declared a National Heritage site by the South African Heritage Resource Agency, on 8 July 2011.

The Union Buildings also represent a national South African Heritage site, and house the offices of the President of South Africa. It has become a landmark and is one of the most popular attractions in the city and an symbol of democracy.

The bronze sculpture on the Union Buildings grounds, can easily be recognized as the former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela.
