5 Wonderful destinations for a weekend out of town

Milan, with its hustle and bustle, is an incredible city. However, sometimes it’s nice to take a break and escape the urban life. Fortunately, there are several wonderful places just a short distance from the city that offer a perfect refuge for a day of relaxation or fun. Here are five destinations, in order of proximity, that are worth exploring for a getaway from Milan.

Chiaravalle (MI)

Just 7 kilometers from the center of Milan, we find this neighborhood completely immersed in greenery. Mainly known for its splendid Cistercian Abbey, founded by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux in 1135. Here, in the refreshment area next to the centuries-old abbey, you can taste fine gastronomic products from the monks' shop such as beer, wine, biscuits, and jams. Let's not forget the Chiaravalle Milanese Mill, a place to observe and develop sustainable models of life from a social, environmental, and economic perspective.

Montevecchia (LC)

In the province of Lecco, nestled among the verdant hills, lies this beautiful town. The village is renowned for its production of aromatic herbs: there is not a corner that is not overrun by rosemary or sage plants. At the highest point of Montevecchia hill, about 500 meters above sea level, stands the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Carmelo, where you can admire enchanting landscapes.

Bellagio (CO)

Located on the shores of Lake Como, Bellagio is one of Lombardy's most charming gems. Known as the "Pearl of Lake Como," this picturesque town captivates visitors with its cobbled streets, historic villas, and lush gardens. You can stroll along the lakefront, visit the gardens of Villa Melzi, or climb up to the Punta Spartivento promontory enjoying breathtaking panoramic views.

Il labirinto della Masone – Fontanellato (PR)

Near Fontanellato, this labyrinth is the world's largest permanent type, a true masterpiece of art and architecture. It was created by art collector and writer Franco Maria Ricci with architects Pier Carlo Bontempi and Davide Dutto. The star-shaped Labyrinth of the Masone covers 7 hectares of land and is made entirely of bamboo plants. At the centre of the labyrinth is a two thousand square metre square surrounded by porticoes and large halls that hosts concerts, exhibitions and numerous cultural events.

Val di Mello (SO)

Located about 130 kilometres north of Milan, this Alpine valley offers a variety of outdoor activities; it is a true paradise for climbing enthusiasts, with many routes for all skill levels. The valley is dotted with picturesque mountain villages where you can enjoy local cuisine as well as immerse yourself in Alpine culture.
