With its 152 km², Grundlsee is one of Austria's largest municipalities by area. Located in the heart of Austria, it belongs to the state of Styria, the Ausseerland region, and the Salzkammergut. The municipality's five villages are situated in an elongated valley on the shores of Lake Grundlsee, framed on three sides by the approximately 1000-meter-high foothills of the Totes Gebirge (Dead Mountains). The most prominent mountains framing this valley are the Hundskogel (1748 m), the Backenstein (1772 m), and the Reichenstein (1913 m) in the north; the Elm (2128 m), the Große Hochkasten (2389 m), and the Weiße Wand (2198 m) in the east; and the Türkenkogel (1756 m) and the Röthelstein (1614 m) in the south. The highest mountain in Grundlsee is the Große Hochkasten at 2389 m, on the border with Upper Austria. Lake Grundlsee, with an area of 4.22 km², is the largest lake in Styria and is drained by the Grundlseer Traun. It is fed by the Stimitz, the Zimitzbach, and the Toplitz, the drainage stream of Lake Toplitz, which is also located in the municipality. Furthermore, the Dreibrüdersee, Elmsee, Henarsee, Kammersee, and the Vorderer and Hinterer Lahngangsee lakes are also within the municipality, as well as the source waters of the Traun, the so-called Traun-Ursprung. A large part of the Grundlsee municipal area is under strict nature protection. Lake Grundlsee, with its kilometer-long natural bathing beach, offers swimmers, divers, surfers, sailors, sunbathers, and nature lovers pure summer joy. There is even a section of the beach reserved for those who prefer uninterrupted tanning. Bathers appreciate the crystal-clear water of Lake Grundlsee (it has drinking water quality) and the freely accessible beach. The largest lake in Styria, affectionately called the "Styrian Sea".
