The city of Varese is located on the shores of the lake of the same name. It is called the Garden City thanks to the numerous and splendid private and public gardens found within the municipality. The territory of the municipality ranges between 238 and 1,150 meters above sea level. The winter in Varese is minimally affected by the moderating influence of Lake Maggiore and the other smaller lakes in the province. Late autumn and winter minimum temperatures frequently drop below zero, albeit by only a few degrees. It is these low nighttime temperatures that create a different climate compared to the areas south of this city. As in other pre-Alpine Lombard cities, fog is a rare phenomenon. Since 1960, it has been the site of the only Italian branch of the European School created for the children of European officials of the Joint Research Centre. The airports of Milan Malpensa and Lugano Agno are about 30 minutes away. The shores of Lake Maggiore can be reached in a 20-minute drive.
