The parish is named after the old Quinta de Santa Clara. The territory of the parish is located in the old "saloia" area, which supplied the city with its farms and fields of cultivation, remaining so until the first decades of the 20th century. The term Ameixoeira is believed to have come from a Moor named Mixo who lived there. Until the 18th century, it was called Mixoeira. It was a place chosen by the people of Lisbon to spend the summer months, and a "resting place" for writers, politicians, and liberal professionals. From 1901 to 1928, the "fashion" of dueling in defense of honor was established on the Estrada Militar. In Charneca, there still exists the old Terreiro da Feira de S. Bartolomeu, the last market square in Lisbon. Famous in both parishes was the "Vinho do Termo" which supplied the capital's taverns, with vineyards predominantly cultivated in the Quintas da Torrinha and Mourisca. A habit that remained there until the first decade of the 20th century was the "bull waiting" on Calçada de Carriche. Another popular custom among the workers and bourgeois of Lisbon was the "visit to the gardens" on Sundays. In the early decades of the 20th century, the farms began to be abandoned by the owners who later authorized the use of the courtyards and uncultivated lands for the construction of "shacks," beginning the area's degradation. In 1959, a large part of Charneca's territory was transferred to the parishes of Lumiar and Olivais. Today, the "old cores" of Ameixoeira and Charneca coexist with the 20th-century construction areas, such as the Torres do Lumiar and the Paço da Ameixoeira, or social housing like Alto do Chapeleiro, Galinheiras, Grafanil, Quinta da Torrinha, and part of Alta de Lisboa. Merger of the former parishes of Charneca and Ameixoeira.
