Ghent is the place to visit for anyone interested in urban art. We were actually surprised to learn that it is one of the best known cities in Europe (and in Belgium) for its street art, found all over the city.
This medieval district is mainly pedestrianised so you can investigate its cobbled streets lined with splendid residences at will. The Lys river runs through Ghent so it is very pleasant to sit at a table on a terrace by the water before continuing your walk through the historic centre and feeling blown away by the beauty of the place.
A must wherever a river flows through a city, a guided boat trip allows you to see your surroundings from a different perspective and at a different pace. Various companies offer these trips and even if the concept is very touristy, it will still create a lasting memory for those taking part.
On this trip you will see the magnificent castle of the Counts of Flanders from another perspective before going to visit and admire it from another viewpoint.
With six different markets open, Sunday is definitely the day for stocking up.
However, Ghent is famous for markets of all kinds, and you can visit a different one almost every day. Everyone can find something to please them amongst the flea markets, markets for fruit and vegetables, flowers, books and animals.
You can enjoy an atmosphere mirroring that of the booksellers along the banks of the Seine in Paris at the book market which runs along the Lys, in Ajuinlei.

The atmosphere of the flower market in Kouter is absolutely charming. As you wander around you will definitely feel tempted to start gardening and introducing flowers inside your home. You can even have a glass of wine accompanied by oysters.
This little treat, which in Dutch is called neuzekes or little nose, is a typical Belgian sweet. Originally this little cone of sugar was flavoured with raspberry. It is now available in all kinds of flavours. As you walk through the historic centre of Ghent you will undoubtedly come across vendors of these famous sweets, so let yourself be tempted!
Chocolato offers a one-hour workshop where you can discover the secrets of chocolate making. You can even make your own bar of chocolate, customising it with the ingredients you have chosen. The workshop is available in English or Dutch. Of course, there will also be an opportunity to taste the goods.
Belgium definitely has many surprises in store for us. There are some wonderful places to discover, especially this summer, then all year round after that!
