French design: Wonderful diversity

In design, Pauline Deltour does not wish to specialize – and we are happy to hear it, as her furniture is just as compelling as her fashion models or even the bike that she has just finished creating.

“In my design approach, I prefer simplicity,” says Pauline Deltour. “I always endeavor to create objects that are useful rather than decorative. For it is functionality that distinguishes the designer from the artist. Sensitivity for the things that surround us is not innate, it only develops if we consciously strive for it.”

 Hamburg
- French artist Pauline Deltour is known for her versatile designs. She explains to Engel & Völkers why she does not want to limit herself to only one style.

Pauline Deltour studied applied arts and design at the Olivier de Serres School in Paris before continuing her education at the National School of Superior Decorative Arts, where she earned a degree in industrial design. Alongside the designer Konstantin Grcic, a native of Munich, she continued to develop her skills. From the beginning, when she had just finished school, he treated her as a true designer. “I created furniture and exhibition spaces. I had the opportunity to take two trips to Japan. The experiences that I had there were incredible, what I learned was priceless.” Konstantin Grcic taught her the trade. “Eighty percent of my current work methods come from him,” Pauline Deltour states with admiration before adding: “I am without a doubt the most German French designer. For it was in Germany that I truly learned the meaning of design.” Since 2010, the young creator, today 35 years old, works in her own studio in Paris. Pauline Deltour’s products all contain her distinctive style and can be recognized by their materials and colors as well as their straight and elegant forms. “At the start, I didn’t have a precise idea of the subsequent appearance that the created object would have. We almost always start from zero – especially due to the wide variety of projects – and then we advance with our work.”
