Jena is a German university and independent city in Thuringia in the metropolitan region of central Germany. After the state capital Erfurt, it is the second largest city in Thuringia with around 111,000 inhabitants and one of the three regional centers of the Free State. In a nationwide comparison, Jena impresses with a low average age.


The University of Jena was founded in 1558 and has borne the name of Friedrich Schiller since 1934. It comprises ten faculties with a total of around 23,000 students. There is also a technical college with around 4,500 students. Approximately every fourth resident is a student, making Jena the city with the highest proportion of students in Germany. In addition, Jena is a center of science and technology for several research institutes and high-tech companies, especially in the field of precision engineering and the optical industry.


Getting to Jena is easy because the city is in the center of Germany and is therefore very well connected in all directions. The city on the Saale can be easily reached by car via the A4 and A9 motorways. The nearest airport is in Erfurt, the state capital of Thuringia, around 70 kilometers away. Leipzig-Halle Airport can also be reached in just one hour via the A9. Arriving by train is just as uncomplicated thanks to good north-south and east-west connections.
