For many people, especially if they do not live in Barcelona, the 22 @ district is totally unknown. This is mainly due to the fact that its creation is quite recent and that it is currently undergoing expansion. In order to get a better idea of where this area is and the advantages of living in it, we want to dedicate a few paragraphs here to talk about this district.
Origins of Barcelona's 22 @ district
Barcelona's 22 @ district was created in 2000 as part of the city council's initiative. The objective was none other than to transform a total of 200 hectares of industrial land belonging to the popular neighbourhood of Poblenou into a place that stands out for its innovative and productive nature and in which modern spaces can be enjoyed both from an industrial and residential perspective. In fact, the main focus of the project was the strategic concentration on intensive activities related to knowledge.
How were the objectives of the 22 @ project in Barcelona achieved?
To achieve the objectives set by the city council of Barcelona, a project was created based on a more compact concept of the city. In it, universities, which are the main sources of knowledge for the inhabitants of the city, share space with those companies dedicated to more innovative plots, as well as training centres, research and technology, housing and green areas. The area was also equipped with basic facilities and services (schools, medical centres, etc.).

Another purpose of the project was to define a more modern economic model based on research and development that should be based on five sectoral pillars. These include means of communication, ICT, energy, medical technologies and design, which are palpable at every step taken by the district. In addition, they were accompanied by several projects focused on facilitating the growth of those firms that decided to settle there.
In summary, the 22 @ district of Barcelona is nowadays a place where creativity and access to technology and innovation prevail with the purpose of encouraging the creation of contact networks. Proof of this is that, since 2001, which was the enforcing date for the project designed by the Barcelona city council, a total of 4,500 companies have been established in its 200 hectares. Some of these companies include Microsoft, Mediapro and Yahoo! In total, these businesses have led to the creation of 56,000 new jobs.
It is, therefore, not unreasonable to say that, at this moment in time, the 22 @ district is one of the main economic drivers of the city of Barcelona.
