The Barcelona Aquarium is considered one of the largest spaces devoted to the study, preservation and dissemination of marine life around the world. The latest figures provided by the institution indicate that the 35 aquariums at this facility contain more than 10,000 different species. This is an aquarium with a very broad variety of sealife, with an 80-metre underwater tunnel. This is why a tour of its facilities is equivalent to walking several kilometres.

The complex is generally divided into three main sections that correspond to roughly three easily identifiable geographical areas. The Mediterranean aquariums approach Barcelona's nearest marine wealth, placing value on the extraordinary variety of species that inhabit the Mediterranean and emphasising the need to preserve them. In any case, each of the tropical aquariums represents the home of the underwater creatures as the completed division offers the most extensive marine life.
Of course, your experience at the Aquarium is not limited to contemplation and knowledge of the species. Two of the most sought-after additional activities are directly related to the most dangerous sea creatures, sharks. 'Dormir con tiburones' or (sleeping with sharks) provides an opportunity for children to spend an entire night sleeping in an aquarium room that's totally surrounded by sharks. For the most daring adults, there is the opportunity to swim with sharks.
Finally, the aquarium offers an uplifting 'backstage' tour that enables visitors to get to know how things work. The laboratories and the hidden rooms are included in the tour itinerary plus there are other interesting sights that can be visited with special tickets. There is also the option for kids to become explorers in the play area, where they can discover the nearest thing to nature tours in Costa Brava and the Medas Islands as well as other parts of the Catalan coast. If you like the idea, pay attention to the special events that are organised regularly in the Aquarium.
