The city of Barcelona has been recognised as the second most favourite in the world of luxury tourism. The first position is taken up by New York, USA.
The luxury tourism study from Holiday Habits was conducted in 2016 by Condé Nast Johansens and concluded that luxury travellers spent between 3,500 and 6,300 euros on average. This would be around five times more than the amount spent by the average tourist, at around 1,000 euros.
According to these studies, The city of Barcelona takes the second place as a preferred destination for tourists, while New York is ranked as the top city for tourists. After Barcelona, the other European cities in the list include: Venice, Paris, Florence, Vienna, and Dublin.
Types of trips and most popular travel dates
83% of these tourists, who usually stay in luxury hotels, take on average between one and four trips per year. As for the duration of their stay, it ranges between long-term stays, short trips, and weekend getaways.
40% of the participants in this study stated that they take their holidays during the summer months, especially in August. Meanwhile, 26% of these participants stated that they choose to travel in autumn, mainly in the month of September.
Analysing the types of places these luxury tourists visited last year, the result showed 66% were city visitors and 48% chose coastal resorts as their ideal destinations for a holiday.
45% of people who took part in this survey were families and 40% travelled with their partners.
23% of these travellers prefer their holidays to include outdoor adventure activities; 20% of the participants in the survey stated that they prefer all inclusive holiday packages.
The data revealed that 7% of luxury travellers stated the importance of taking their pets on holiday with them, while 10% value a good range of sports activities in order to play their favourite sports.
The future of luxury tourism
Regarding accommodation for future holidays, 76% of travellers are thinking of a cruise, 73% wish to stay in a luxury hotel and 70% prefer budget hotels. The hotel room and its amenities are also important for the luxury traveller. 45% of these tourists book the most luxury rooms ("deluxe" suites), followed by 28% that choose a basic room and 24% that choose to stay in a suite.
