Barcelona is divided into ten districts, each one with its own council. The district of Gracia is one of them.
Gracia was originally located in the former Vila de Gracia, which was an independent population of Barcelona from 1856. This district became part of the city of Barcelona in 1897.
Size and data
This district is the smallest in Barcelona, with an approximate size of 4.19 km². However, it is the one with the largest population density.
The district of Grace encompasses several neighbourhoods: La Salud, El Coll, Vallcarca, Penitentes, Gracia and Camp d'en Grassot i Gràcia Nova, and Penitentes.
Places with charm
The plazas are the characteristic parts of the district of Grace. Plaça del Diamant stands out as an authentic icon of the area. This plaza inspired the novelist, Mercé Rodoreda, who wrote the book, La Plaça del Diamant in 1962.
Casa VIcens is another typical place in this district. It is a modernist style house designed by Antoni Gaudí and considered his first great work. Although this house was privately owned for a long time, in 2014 it became a museum house and was opened to the public.
Plaça de les Dones del 36 is the last building that was constructed in the district and was inaugurated in August 2009. Its name refers to women who were imprisoned during the civil war.
