Between 22nd and 30th of April, the Royal Tennis Club in Barcelona, also known as Trofeo Conde de Godó, will stage the 65th Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
This tournament is one of the most important events in Spain and brings together the best of the international players with a significant number of spectators that make it not only a sporting event, but a true emblem of the city. It is one of the largest social events in Barcelona thanks to all the international celebrities who help make this event even bigger. It should be remembered that, during the last edition of the Trofeo Conde de Godó, about 65,000 people gathered at the Royal Tennis Club in Barcelona.
The history of the Trofeo goes back to 1953 when Carles Godó Valls or Count Godó, decided to present a trophy as part of the inauguration at the new headquarters of the Royal Tennis Club in the exclusive area of Pedralbes.
The facilities in which the tournament is held are splendid, with four courts for the competition. Courts 1 and 2 are for singles matches as per tradition since the year 2000. The seating capacity in these courts is 2,000.
For its part, the central court, better known by the public as the "talisman track" was rebuilt in 2012 to increase its overall capacity, which currently reaches a total of 8,100 spectators, thanks to the extra tiers that are installed specifically for this prestigious tournament.
In addition to the sporting theme of the event, attendees can enjoy Fan Boulevard, a shopping street in which many big brands can take advantage of the opportunity to display their products and services to the public.
In this 65th edition, the biggest contest of the tournament is in the hands of Rafael Nadal, the tennis player who holds the record with a total of 9 titles. He will play for the tenth trophy that would also represent his tournament number 50 on clay court and a total of 70 career titles.
Another tennis player to watch out for is Kei Nishikori, who will play his fourth consecutive final, after winning in 2014 and 2015 and finishing 5th in 2016. Likewise, the following players will also be present: Roberto Bautista the second Spaniard in the ATP ranking, David Ferrer, Feliciano López, who has made a total of 17 appearances at the tournament, and the Wimbledon finalist, Tomas Berdych.
In addition, the tournament will show its support in fighting world hunger by donating all the surplus foods that aren't sold at the stalls to (NSF) Nutrition Without Borders, a nonprofit charity organisation.
