Barcelona's strip of Mediterranean coast has 4 kilometres of beaches stretching between north Llevant and south of Sant Sebastià. These beaches benefited greatly from the renovation that took place in the 90s, giving them more pleasing appearances and facilitating millions of people who come for sunbathing and swimming.
All these beaches are well maintained and equipped with multiple services, with excellent connection through the yellow metro line. They are also accessible with just a ten-minute walk from the city centre. Although the proximity among these beaches makes them very similar to each other, there are still some differences that remain.
Barceloneta Beach is one of the largest and oldest, located in one of the most traditional neighbourhoods in which fresh air is breathed every day. Highly popular, not only for citizens of Barcelona, but also for tourists, its nearly 600 metres in length are equipped with several bars and extensive sports and leisure facilities.
Somorrostro Beach, formerly part of Barceloneta, was renamed and its location is very central and well equipped.
The church of Sant Miquel del Port (iglesia de Sant Miquel del Port) gives its name to San Miquel Beach, one of the busiest and liveliest beaches that is somewhat smaller in size.
In the district of Ciutat Vella, you can find Sant Sebastia Beach, the largest, with more than one kilometre in length. Some of the biggest sports clubs of Barcelona are located here. It is usually visited by older people and has some nudist areas too. This beach also has a special area for the disabled, equipped with wheelchairs on which they can enjoy sunbathing, assisted by volunteers. Next to the Sant Sebastia Beach, there is a Torre (Tower) where a cable car station connects to Montjüic Mountain (Montaña de Montjüic).
The Barcelona coastline remodeling was the result of 1992 Olympics that led to the development of Mar Bella Beach, one of the preferred beaches by young people. It has sports facilities and children's play areas and a nautical base from which you can enjoy many water activities.
