Museums in Cerdanya

The Cerdanya region treasures an important cultural heritage, of great interest for tourism. In this post we propose a tour of the museums in which this rich cultural heritage of the area is collected and displayed.

-Cerdà Museum: located in Puigcerdà, it stands on what was once a convent, and which houses three permanent exhibitions. One under the name "Conventus" which includes an exhibition on the medieval convents in the area, with special emphasis on Puigcerdà’s convent itself. The exhibition is divided into three spaces, throughout which you can learn about the role that convents had since the Middle Ages. In addition, it also deals with the life of prayer and sacrifice that the monks led and their relationship with the population of the time.

Another space hosts a museography of the typical Ceretan house, its architecture and its influence on society, family and work. And the third space talks about the history of Puigcerdà town in all its aspects: nature, culture, evolution...

-Esteve Pharmacy Museum: it is located in the historic center of Llívia and is considered the oldest in Europe. Its origins date back to the fifteenth century, and today it has been converted into a museum. In its facilities you can see precious boxes from the Renaissance period, decorated with images of saints and famous people. It also houses a baroque-style cabinet carved by Josep Sunyer and a large collection of albarelli, the name given to the classic ceramic jars in old apothecaries.

-Clogs Museum: found in the main square of the town of Meranges, it reproduces the history of this wooden footwear. On its shelves you can see how they were handmade, emphasizing on the difficult process of obtaining the wood that is used as raw material for its manufacturing. The wood must have some special conditions and it also shows the steps that were taken to work this material. It also shows how they were sold and how they reached all parts of the country.

-Cal Sindreu Museum: in this case, you must go to Ger to enjoy the wonderful paintings collection housed in an old rural house. The house is built following the traditional architecture that was used in the rural areas of the Catalan Pyrenees. The interior is divided into three floors where you can admire this precious paintings. Most of the works are watercolors and date from the 19th century.

-Das Museum Collection: The Common House in Das houses this museum that delves into the ethnography of Cerdanya. A good way of doing cultural tourism and get both the little ones and adults who do not know the rural environment to get closer to a way of life unknown to many. The museum space consists of six rooms and in each of them you can visit a different type of object: utensils from the countryside, from the “era” or patio, from the kitchen and from the forest are just some of them. In addition, it reproduces the way of life of shepherds in the countryside.

We invite you to take a different tour of Cerdanya.
